Before you send a South African government job application

Public-service applications are instruction-heavy. The safest approach is to treat the official advert as the final checklist for that specific post.

Start with the original advert

  • Confirm the department, title, reference number and closing time.
  • Check whether external applicants may apply.
  • Use only the email, portal or delivery address shown in the advert.
  • Direct vacancy questions to the advertising department, not DPSA.

Complete the current Z83

The current official form took effect on 1 January 2021. DPSA guidance says the form must be completed in full and signed. Use a separate form for each post and copy its reference exactly.

Attach only what the advert requests

Many current public-service adverts initially request a Z83 and detailed CV, with certified documents requested from shortlisted candidates. Requirements can differ, so the advert—not a social post or old checklist—wins.

Keep proof

  • Open every attachment before sending.
  • Save the sent email, portal confirmation or delivery receipt.
  • Record the closing date and follow-up contact in your application tracker.
