Job scam warning signs South African applicants should check

A convincing logo or WhatsApp profile is not proof of an employer. Verify the opportunity before sending identity documents, banking details or money.

Stop when an advert asks for money

The Department of Employment and Labour warns that its recruitment is free. Treat fees for placement, interviews, uniforms, background checks or “unlocking” a stipend as a serious warning sign.

Verify independently

  • Find the vacancy from the employer’s real website, not the link in the message.
  • Check that the email domain matches the organisation.
  • Call a number published on the official site if you are unsure.
  • Never share an OTP, PIN or password with a recruiter.

Save evidence and report

Keep screenshots, phone numbers, payment instructions and email headers. Report impersonation to the real organisation and use the appropriate official fraud or police channel.
