Police trainee requirements
The SAPS application process page lists who may be appointed under the SAPS Act. In summary, applicants must:
- Be a South African citizen with permanent residence, aged 18 to under 30.
- Have a Senior Certificate (Grade 12) or equivalent.
- Be fluent in English and at least one other official language.
- Pass physical, medical and psychological assessments.
- Have no criminal convictions, allow fingerprints and background checks, and have no visible tattoos contrary to SAPS objectives.
- Be willing to take the oath of office, undergo training and serve anywhere in South Africa.
What training looks like
New recruits enter the Basic Police Development Learning Programme, which combines academy training with workplace placement at a police station. Stipend, salary and phase lengths are set in each intake advert, so rely on the current advert rather than older figures shared online.
How to apply safely

- Use the exact form the advert asks for: the SAPS trainee form or a Z83.
- Attach only the documents listed and submit by the stated method before the closing date.

Questions people ask
- How old must I be to join SAPS as a trainee?
- SAPS states applicants must be at least 18 and younger than 30, with documentary proof. Always check the age rule in the current intake advert.
- Do I need matric to join SAPS?
- Yes. SAPS requires a Senior Certificate (Grade 12) or equivalent. Some intakes also run a stream for applicants with a relevant NQF 6 diploma or degree.
- Does SAPS charge an application fee?
- No legitimate SAPS recruitment asks for money. Anyone requesting payment for a form, a place at the academy or “fast-tracking” is running a scam.
- Where do SAPS adverts appear?
- On the SAPS careers website, in the weekly DPSA vacancy circular for some posts, and on official government channels. Trainee intakes are announced publicly with their own closing dates.
- Do I need a Z83 for SAPS?
- It depends on the advert. Police trainee intakes have used SAPS’s own application form; other SAPS posts may require the Z83. Follow the specific advert.
